Outside the Lens - Media Makers

The mission of Outside the Lens is to amplify voices through photography, filmmaking, and digital media, catalyzing change within themselves, their communities, and the world. Since 2007, we have provided digital media access and education to communities across San Diego and the world that otherwise would have been left behind- bridging the digital divide by giving under resourced communities access to the digital tools and education necessary to tell their stories, cultivate their creativity and grow their confidence. San Diego Media Makers, an innovative program of Outside the Lens, is an inclusive, transformative film and new media production studio. The program is guided by the philosophy that adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) need creative, educational, social & economic opportunities to achieve self-sufficiency and community inclusion. Currently Offering Two Workshop Courses: Intro to Film Analysis (Mon-Thurs, 1:00pm - 3:30pm) This class will cover the development of film as an art form, its history from the pioneers of the silent era to the modern-day blockbuster, including narrative and documentary. We will analyze story structure, screenwriting, production design, cinematography, sound and visual effects and more! Students will develop the language and skills of a storyteller and filmmaker as they investigate short and feature length films, and have discussions around the structure and themes of the films. At the conclusion of the course, students will pitch a film they would like to create and detail elements of how the film will be made. Photography & Photo Editing (Mon-Thurs, 9:30am-12:00pm) Students will cover the fundamentals of photography during this course - from the essentials of composition, lighting and color theory, to the fascinating genres of street photography, portraiture and more. Students will delve into the technical side of creating imagery, as well as examining the work of iconic photographers and visual artists. Students will also explore photo editing basics as well as more advanced techniques, utilizing a wide variety of photo editing apps and programs. At the end of the course, students will come away with a small and diverse portfolio of their own photography work.
