I am a parent of a young adult who is currently enrolled in the self determination program and has been receiving services through this model for the last two years. I am also an IF now and took this role on because I was misled by someone who was certified but could not guide or do anything without me leading them to it, and even then would get it wrong. I am a scientist by training and therefore becoming an IF to advocate for my daughter or others who need it was a challenge worth taking.
