In 2023, I dove headfirst into person-centered planning and independent facilitation to help my sister transition into the Self-Determination Program. From the very beginning, I was actively involved throughout the process— from creating a PCP based on her strengths, needs, and goals to coordinating services and advocating for her every step of the way. I gained invaluable hands-on experience in navigating the ins and outs of the SDP program. Our success in this journey caught the attention of her coach and service coordinator, who referred me for formal training in person-centered planning and independent facilitation. This training allowed me to deepen my understanding of the principles of Self-Determination: freedom, authority, support, responsibility, and confirmation. I passionately believe in these principles because they empower individuals to take control of their lives, pursue their dreams, and thrive in inclusive communities.
